WHAT IS PCOS?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome is a complex hormonal condition causing abnormal growths on the ovaries. The term\u00a0\u2018polycystic\u2019 means \u2018many cysts\u2019, meaning many partially grown follicles form on the ovaries, which each contain an egg. These rarely grow to maturity or produce eggs that can be fertilised.<\/p>\n

While the cause of this remains unclear, woman experiencing PCOS will often have high levels of insulin, or male hormones called androgens. The symptoms can vary in intensity, however PCOS can cause severe long-lasting problems if not correctly managed.<\/p>\n

It is relatively common, affecting 12 to 18 percent of women of reproductive age (between late adolescence and menopause). However almost 70% of these cases remain undiagnosed.<\/p>\n
