Everything You Need To Know About Getting Lip Fillers

13 July 2021

Lip augmentation has been one of the most popular non surgical cosmetic treatments in the last few years. Although lip fillers have been in the spotlight more so in recent times, their history goes back as far as the early 19th century. Whether you’re looking to add volume to your lips or even out your lip shape, dermal fillers are an incredibly versatile treatment that can be customised to your individual needs. Today, we dive into everything you need to know about lip fillers in order to equip you with all the information you need before you schedule an appointment with one of our experienced dermal clinicians. Read on to find out more!

What Are Dermal Fillers?

Dermal fillers, often also referred to as soft tissue fillers, are soft gel-like substances that are injected under the skin to create volume and fullness. Dermal fillers work by mimicking hyaluronic acid — a natural sugar molecule in your body that binds with water to revitalise and add facial volume almost instantly. The lips aren’t the only area that these fillers are used in either — you can get dermal fillers in areas such as your forehead, cheeks, chin and nose to create the facial aesthetic that you are after.

Benefits Of Lip Fillers

Enhanced Appearance
By far, the biggest and most obvious benefit of lip fillers is enhanced appearance. Aside from adding volume to your lips, lip fillers are great at reducing the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines on the lips that occur due to ageing and other factors such as smoking. Lip fillers offer a natural looking solution that compliment your features and help to accentuate the contours and outlines of your face.

Quick, Easy and Painless
Unlike surgical procedures, lip fillers are a quick, easy and painless experience especially when it is done by one of our professional dermal clinicians. Most filler procedures take no longer than 30 minutes to complete, and are administered with an ultra fine needle in conjunction with local anesthetic making it an incredibly pain-free experience.

Added Hydration
Because hyaluronic acid attracts water when injected into the skin, thus restoring hydration and plumpness to the lips. The result? Incredibly soft lips that survive without the constant use of lip balms or lip treatments.

Minimal Side Effects
Both dermatologists and cosmetologists agree that hyaluronic acid fillers rarely ever cause any side effects and/or allergic reactions in patients. Patients can expect to feel a slight tingling sensation for a few hours after treatment which should disappear within 24 hours. However, it is incredibly important that you disclose any allergies or medication that you may be taking to one of our clinicians in your initial consultation. This will help our team select the right type of filler for your individual needs.

How Long Do Lip Fillers Last?

There is no one size fits all when it comes to how long lip fillers last. This is highly dependent on how much you get injected, along with other factors such as your metabolism and the type of product used. Generally speaking, patients can expect results that last anywhere between 6 months to 3 years depending on individual circumstances. With that said, many of our patients opt for a top up at least once a year in order to maintain the desired volume and size that they are after.

Do Lip Fillers Hurt?

As mentioned before, dermal lip fillers are a relatively pain-free treatment that offer incredible results. With the help of local anesthetic, most patients feel close to nothing during their procedure. You may experience a tingling sensation in the hours following your appointment, and in some cases patients may experience minor bruising that lasts for no longer than a few days.

Can You Remove Lip Fillers?

The quick answer to this is yes. Hyaluronic acid fillers  such as Juvéderm and Restylane can be partially or fully dissolved with an enzyme called hyaluronidase. This enzyme dissolves any hyaluronic acid that has been injected into your lips, returning them to their normal size and fullness. Side effects are similar to those of getting lip injections in the first place; namely swelling and bruising that lasts for a maximum of 2-4 days.

Lip fillers are an incredibly effective and minimally invasive cosmetic procedure that can truly transform your face and bring back some youth into otherwise tired looking lips.
