Like all pigmentation, age spots are the result of an increased production in melanin. Identifying the causes of this form of pigmentation is difficult, however sun and UV exposure combined with skin ageing is a likely cause. This discolouration is predominantly found on the face, neck, decolletage and hands, however it can also spread to the arms and legs, where increased sun exposure is more common.
