How does it work?

Chemical Peels at a Glance

Chemical peels penetrate different parts of the skin, depending on the strength, making it suitable to target various concerns both on the surface of the skin as well as deeper skin layers. By removing the upper layers of the skin, chemical peels encourage the turnover of skin cells, leading to the regeneration of new skin cells. The process also causes an increase in collagen, elastin, and glycosaminoglycan production as new tissue is generated to replace it.

Chemical peels are broken down into light, medium and deep peels to treat different skin concerns. Light chemical peels are more superficial peels used to target fine lines and surface blemishes. Medium depth peels penetrate the skin deeper and can be used for deeper wrinkles and hyperpigmentation, and deep chemical peels are best suited for more deep set skin conditions and visible signs of sun damage.

Preparing for your chemical peel

Prepping the skin to receive a chemical peel can have a significant impact on the outcome and downtime following treatment. Sensitive skin types should speak with their practitioner to discuss pre-treatment protocol. Before and after care recommendations may vary depending upon the patient’s skin type and the chemical peel to be used. A common prep protocol for a chemical peel includes a skincare regimen containing retinoids, alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs), pigment inhibitors such as hydroquinone or kojic acid, and consistent sun protection. This pre chemical peel protocol is stopped 3-5 days prior to receiving the chemical peel to ensure the skin is not weakened before the medium depth chemical peel.

Get started

There are a few things to avoid in the days before your chemical peel. Take care to avoid excessive sun exposure and don’t schedule any other procedures for the face, including laser hair removal and injectables. We also recommend seeking advice from the dermatologist or skin care professional performing your peel, regarding adjustments to your skincare routine before the procedure.
